I am wondering if it is the type of bluetooth that is used and the phone.

I would point to the Device rather than the BT version.

I have heard issues of connection problems with the more popular phones having issues until they have had system updates and/or the Firmware in the car has been updated.

I personally have not had experience of your model of phone and I don't personally know anyone that has one so I can't really comment any further other than say, reboot phone and reboot Rlink if you have not already done so.
